If something appears on this website, does it count as 'published'?

I was thinking about entering some writing competitions and in the terms and conditions of each of them it states that whatever you submit must not have been previously published. I was wondering, does that mean anything I enter into the competition cannot be posted on this website, or that anything I post on this website cannot be entered?

Furthermore, as a student, I was wondering about posting assignment work. If I post something I have submitted as an assessment, could SafeAssign find that post online, match it with the work I have submitted and mark me down as a plagiarist?

If it is your work and you want to submit it for a competition, then submit it. The idea of 'published' under these conditions means accepted for publication by a recognised publisher (which this site is not) or having been paid in some other capacity for the work, so if u want, then go for it.

As regards to student work submitted for assessment, copyright remains with you and u can do what u want with it.

Good questions.

With regard to the first, yes, posting a blog on this site counts as published.

Safe Assign might find your work here. And I will check up on this, so don't quote me on it yet, but the program matches your assignment work with a series of different pieces. The marker has the ability to look at both the source of these pieces, as well as the content. It would be very clear whether or not the source of the 'plagarism' was your own blog on this site.

I doubt this site would qualify as 'published' for most competitions or awards, as you don't get paid for your work, but it's worth while checking with the organisers of the competition re their rules. I suspect that you rework your pieces after receiving comment on them here, so you could say that they were drafts and that the finished piece had never been published.

Sharing material on this site does qualify as 'published' under defamation law, however.

I've just had a chat with Gary concerning this publication issue, and it seems I was wrong. Publishing on this site probably does not count for being published. however, if your work get staken by a publisher, they will copyright over it and makes ask for you to have it deleted from here. Sorry about the confusion:)
