Writing Opportunities

Just cruising the internet and seeking out writing gigs. Thought I'd share. :)

Boo!

A list of opportunities courtesy of the National Young Writer's Festival:

2009 John Marsden Prize for Young Australian Writers

Yesterday, the winners of the 2009 John Marsden Prize for Young Australian Writers was announced. Continuing Scriber-Space's winning streak, as established by the illustrious Tim Roberts, my poem 'The Wolves Go' was awarded as Highly Commended. :)

John Marsden had this to say:

'This is a disturbing, beautifully written poem. From the opening line we know we are in interesting hands. Ominous, sinister, but a work of art. The poet plunders old stories to take us into a world where nothing is saf… Continue

Mum

You feel the colour rising from your lips to your cheeks and the sweat from your nape sliding down your back, your back arched against your stomach which is big and ready to drop like a ripe fruit. In front of you sits a woman with lips pursed.

I'm sorry, she says. We don't have a maternity ward here. A chill climbs the wobbling ladder of your spine and the muscles in your lower back clench like a fist.

Your car car broke down on the highway and no one would stop and your phone didn't work. Yo… Continue

Prisoner

There's a grimace on his face and I know he's cracked like grandma's china. His face presses to the floor, there's wet dust and the smell of urine and sweat and blood in his nostrils. Sometimes his own, sometimes not, because these rooms aren't cleaned all that often. If you leave the floor drenched in the agony of previous POWs there's a ghost in the room, and you want them scared. You want their heart slapping hard bass against their sternum before you even throw your shadow in the door.

Literature is not about how language succeeds, but how language fails.

Haha, aw, this was such fun to read. My only suggestion is that I think 'porn shop' ought to be 'pawn shop'. :)

This makes me think of John Cage. He once wanted to know what silence was, REAL silence, so he organised to spend some time in an isolation chamber through NASA or some epic organisation like that. What he found was that there is no such thing as re…

I LOVE this sketch! Although, I think it would have been more appropriate if Karl Marx had made the first move.

I really like the thing about god bleeding, too. Although I must admit, as soon as I read the word 'vampire', I turned off; but that's less to do with your writing and more to do with movements in popular fiction as of late. :)

Maria Arena I believe. My first lecture's in a week and a half, so I'll see. Glad it's good. Short stories sound fun! And thanks for the offer - I'll see how I go.

What sort of assessments am I looking at for the semester?

Yeah. It's going to be interesting, and highly stressful.

What did you think of the course?

Just an introductory course into creative writing (CMN116). There were only a few options available to me while still at highschool. Looking forward to it though.

'Writer' is probably the best title to have associated with myself. I love to write. Hopefully I'll find time to get some stuff on here eventually.

I also heard about it from USC - had orientation day for the creative writing course I'm taking on Monday.
