2009 John Marsden Prize for Young Australian Writers

Yesterday, the winners of the 2009 John Marsden Prize for Young Australian Writers was announced. Continuing Scriber-Space's winning streak, as established by the illustrious Tim Roberts, my poem 'The Wolves Go' was awarded as Highly Commended. :)

John Marsden had this to say:

'This is a disturbing, beautifully written poem. From the opening line we know we are in interesting hands. Ominous, sinister, but a work of art. The poet plunders old stories to take us into a world where nothing is safe. Niceness is a long way away.

'Although these last three poems were "only" commended, I believe all three writers have already surpassed the standard by which poems are considered publishable, and the standard by which poets are considered "professionals". These entries were not as spectacular as the three that I placed first, second and third, but they are authentic, sophisticated and wholly successful, written with the certitude that marks out true poets.'

OMG! That's officially my first review EVER! And it's not even scathing!

You can read my entry, along with the other winning entries, here. They are all amazing. Except mine. :)

Thanks, Tim. :) And you're very welcome. Since you hoped for good writing news for other Scriber-Space members in one of your recent entries, I thought it would be prudent to include you. Perhaps as you typed that, you surreptitiously brushed against a genie lamp or something. :P There's still ten days left in 2009, maybe there will be some more news before 2010 rolls in. In which case, I might have to upgrade you from 'in possession of a genie; advise to obtain genie for self' to 'in possession of voodoo magic; advise to anger at own risk.'

Many congratulations, Caitlin! For the poem, commendation and the VERY encouraging comments by no less than John Marsden. And thanks for the kind mention in your intro. :)
Trusting this prize will help 'make' your festive season. :)
All the best, Tim in Canberra.
