The night is perfect. There isn’t a cloud in the sky, leaving the expanse free for stars to watch us carefully. Thank goodness I am inside. I don’t want the heavens watching what I plan to do with my
lover tonight. My lover. What a strange word to associate with my new companion. And a little too early to say, really. I’m getting ahead of myself. I mean, we’ve never actually done it before. We’ve talked about it and whatnot, but tonight’s the night.
So maybe my fear of the heavens watching is more a matter of embarrassment than anything else. This is bound to be awkward and confusing. A real mess. But I asked for it, I guess.
He’s in the living room, drinking the last of his glass of wine. I disappeared to clean up the plates. I hope he doesn’t go to the kitchen in the next few minutes, because I’m not there. I’m up here in the
bedroom, setting up the candles. A little cliched, maybe, but it’s more
that I can’t bear to be seen in full light than about romance. Not yet
anyway. I’m no where near comfortable enough. Flickering light is
rather flattering.‘Darling? Where did you disappear to?’ Oh dear, he’s realised that I’m not where I said I would be. Perhaps it’s a little bit to do with how nervous I am, I realise as I look at my shaking hands. Shaking like
a leaf, I daresay.‘Upstairs.’
‘Are there are dishes up there?’ he chuckles and I can hear his voice getting closer. I rush into the ensuite bathroom and take off my clothing, leaving just my new lingerie which I bought especially for
the occasion. I lay down on the bed just as I hear the floorboards
squeak outside the door. ‘May I come in?’‘Of course.’ I prop my head up on my hand, trying to look sexy. The room is awash with flickering golden light, hiding my middle-aged stomach and shaking limbs. I’ve never been so nervous in all my life.
Even my first time wasn’t so terrifying.‘Darling, you look gorgeous.’ He sees me lying on the bed and a smile creeps over his face. Then he flicks on the lightswitch, either oblivious to the reasons for my candles or simply uncaring (probably
the latter of the two) and walks toward me, grinning ear-to-ear.
